Your LinkedIn Profile Photo Should Look Like You … Today!

Your profile photo makes a massive difference to how people perceive you on LinkedIn - and whether they'll even bother clicking on your profile in the first place.

But here's what I see all the time: group shots where I have to guess which person you are, sunglasses hiding your face, photos from 2015 (we all know it's 2015 because of the haircut!), or heavily cropped wedding photos.

The golden rule: Just you, recent, and recognisable.

Think about it - if you turned up to a networking event and I couldn't recognise you from your profile photo, that'd be awkward, right? Same principle online.

Your profile photo needs to say "approachable" and "knows their stuff" in equal measure. You want people to feel like they already know you a bit when they meet you in person.

The only exception? If your profile photo shows you dancing on a table in Val d'Isère, it only works if you're a tour guide in the Alps! Otherwise, save that one for your personal social media.

💡 Finding the option: When you upload a new photo, LinkedIn gives you visibility options - you can choose who sees it (1st-degree connections only, your network, all LinkedIn members, or anyone). This is also where you can add frames like "Open to Work" or "Hiring" if relevant

🟢 ACTION: Have an honest look at your current profile photo.

Is it recent? Is it clearly just you? Would someone recognise you from it at a networking event? If you're answering "erm, maybe not..." to any of these, it's time to book a quick photo session. Even a good quality smartphone photo with decent lighting and a plain background works brilliantly.
