Five steps to reducing social media overwhelm

If there’s one thing I hear more than anything else when clients come to me for help, it’s this: ‘I feel so overwhelmed!’ 

They haven’t got the time, knowledge or mental energy to do their business social media channels justice; they worry about being left behind — but know it’s never been more important to be visible and consistent.

Like you, they want channels they’re proud of. Channels that represent their brand and connect them to their customers. 

But, more often than not, they don’t know what to post and are struggling to join the dots.

My five-step guide to solving the social media overwhelm will put you on the road to stress-free social media posting for your business.  That sounds good, doesn’t it!

  • STEP ONE: GET STRATEGIC

    This is your “action plan”.  Like the rest of your business, your social media content should be approached strategically. That means being clear on your goals and objectives from the get go.

    Your strategy should include: 

    • Your social media goals - conversions, awareness, engagement

    • Which channel/s you will focus on - you don’t have to be everywhere

    • Your brand tone of voice - authenticity is key

    • A clear picture of your customers - demographic and psychographic

    • The type of content you plan to create - video, static, graphic

    • An overview of your competitors - what’s working or not working for them

    • Analytics – where are you now

    With a little effort up front, a social media strategy will save you time; money and connect you with your perfect customers.

  • STEP TWO: GET ORGANISED

    Trying to fit your social media activity around a busy business and your personal life can be draining — especially if you’re always doing it on the fly.

    Put some time in your diary — a meeting with yourself — each month to plan out your posts. Start with booking out a day. Don’t worry, you’ll get quicker as you get into thes swing of things.

    Things to think about:

    • upcoming events

    • seasonal activity

    • promotions or collaborations

    • awareness days

    • products or services you’d like to raise the profile of

    Ensure you have a good mix of engaging, entertaining, educational and exciting content — think about the kind of things you’d “stop the scroll” for.

  • STEP THREE: GET TOOLED UP

    There are lots of brilliant time-saving tools that can help you speed up your content creation.

    I’ll let you into a secret, we don’t all have a team of graphic designers at our beck n call. Take a look at Canva, it’s a marketing design tool that anyone can get started with. Canva is available on desktop and app with a ton of pre-loaded templates for you to customise or let your creatives juices run wild (not too wild!) and create your own.  The free version is a great place to start, but the pro version is insanely good value, approx £100 for the year. Pro-tip: when sharing posts created with Canva don’t forget to @ them or add the hashtag #CanvaLove for the chance to be featured and reshared by them. 

    Using a scheduling tool is also a great way to save time — I couldn’t serve my clients without one. I use Agorapulse, and what I really, really like is the ease of scheduling; being able to get a daily, weekly or monthly view; the reporting is slick, simple and looks great too. It also has a free version that will supports up to 3 channels.   If you are only using Facebook and Instagram, then use their own scheduling tools via Meta Business Suite app or desktop (access via your Facebook Business Page).

  • STEP FOUR: GET SAVVY

    There’s really no need to reinvent the wheel every time you post. 

    Finding ways to repurpose your content — and keep life simple — is key and an essential social media channel strategy.

    Fall in love with your social media channel insights and analytics and look at what’s worked well in the past — by this I mean, what’s getting good engagement and interaction as well as reach (ie eyes on your posts). Be green and recycle your posts.  

    The harsh reality is that only a small percentage of your followers will have seen your content the first time around — so honestly, no-one’s going to remember if you reshare or post a tweaked version of it.  There will always be someone seeing it for the first time and it’ll tick the boxes for them.

  • STEP FIVE: GET HELP

    Hiring someone to help you with your social media – whether that’s training or full-on management – isn’t a sign of defeat.
