Don’t Use Stylised Text on Social Media. Here’s Why …
If you don't give a 💩 about accessibility or discoverability in search on social (and beyond), then you can ignore this advice!
Still with me? Yes, I knew you were a good egg!
Here's why you should avoid using stylised text in your social media captions:
1) Screen readers can't understand it - people using assistive technology will miss your message entirely or hear gibberish
2) Search functions can't find it - your content becomes invisible in searches, significantly reducing your reach
3) Platform algorithms ignore it - those fancy characters might stand out, but they can hurt your content's performance
💡My quick tip: Stick to standard text for captions.
- If you want visual distinction, emojis are generally accessible and well-supported by screen readers, but use them sparingly; don't be chucking them about willy-nilly like a box of confetti!
