AVOID BURNOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND BRING BACK THE JOY

Being self-employed doesn’t come with the same degree of financial security that you have when working for someone else, that’s obvious.  However, sometimes that does lead us to say YES to everything as we fear missing the opportunity and work drying up. On top of that, there is everything associated with running your own business that might not be top of your skillset eg finances, marketing and general admin.

All of this can take its toll, so here are five tips to help you avoid burnout and continue enjoying being a business owner.

  • GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK

    • make time for yourself and book it in.  Whether this is regular exercise; professional development and absolutely a complete break – with out of office on.  One of the reasons you’ve gone out on your own is to give yourself a break from the nine to five, so relish and enjoy that flexibility.  Yes, you may have to be more present during traditional hours for some clients, but focus on what’s important for you and your business relationships rather than jumping to someone else’s “urgent”.
  • TRY WORKING SOMEWHERE ELSE

    • spending time on your own day in day out, at your kitchen table or office shed can send you a bit doolally.  That’s why co-working over the past 5 years in the UK has seen massive growth.  Locally here in Sussex, I’ve used a couple of fantastic spaces: Chichester – Rume2 and Brighton & Hove – Platf9rm.  But there are a number of other spaces throughout the county that might just be right for you.  The benefit of co-working is the opportunity to connect and work with others in a similar position as yourself, ie a small business owner. The sense of community can also have a positive impact on your wellbeing as well as sparking creativity in your business. If quiet and good wifi aren’t your main priorities, coffee shops also get you out the house and provide that all important change of scenery.
  • COLLABORATE AND OUTSOURCE

    • this is why I set up a networking group, Last Friday Club, I missed having a team around me AND realised I didn’t have the skills to do everything my business needed.  Through networking I’ve hired a bookkeeper to do all my tax returns; a web development company to create and manage my website and spoken to many other experts who have helped me along the way so I can get on with doing what I do well; helping business owners “do social better”. Outsourcing and collaborating has saved me hours of time and stress. Two other networking groups that I’m a part of that I can highly recommend: The Collective SC – operating in Chichester and Southsea and about to launch in Worthing.  Design Collective Chichester – a network of creative professionals.
  • AVOID OVER PROMISING

    • hands up who’s guilty of this? ME! And it does nothing but leave you feeling awful.  Self-employment can feel pressured enough, don’t add to it – ensure you manage expectations from the outset so that you can deliver the best value and quality that you want to be recommended for.

  • DON’T FEAR SAYING NO

    • again, I’m guilty. I’m a people pleaser and this sometimes works against me. Saying no sometimes means the door is open for you to say yes to something that is a far better fit. Reflect after each project and only try to work with clients who are your ideal client or on the path to being so.

Look out for each other, collaboration over competition every time.  Offer to help if you see a peer struggling, be generous with your time and advice and it’ll be reciprocated.  This will hopefully set you on the right path to achieving a bit more balance and bring back the joy of being a business owner.
